Do other companies know how to tune ATS-Vs?

Some do, but most don’t.  About once per week someone converts from another tuner to Tapout.  Some times we’re fortunate enough to get scan data before they flash back to stock and we start our remote tune process.  Here’s a screen shot we received on Sunday, April 12.

In the first section of the scan, the yellow trace shows that the car was not holding correct or even safe rail pressure.  Even though this particular tuner does a wonderful job marketing a full array of fancy acronyms like Active Rail Pressure  Management, the facts show that their tune does not hold rail pressure.  Where the cursor was in the scan at 114 mph they were commanding 2,611 psi, but only had 1,739 psi.  This is extremely dangerous for the customer.  And it’s incredibly dishonest marketing by the other tuner.

In the second section of the scan, the green trace shows actual throttle position.  Even though the customer held his foot on the floor, his throttle position ranged from 55% to 100% throughout the pull.

In the fourth section of the scan, the red trace shows that he had constant knock retard.  This means that he either wasn’t running enough octane for the current tune, or they didn’t properly tune his car for the octane level he runs.  This screen shot shows his average knock retard for the entire scan.  Pretty scary stuff!

Looking at his LTFTs (long-term fuel trims) provides a clue regarding how well the current tune matches his intake system.  OEM calibrations are typically in the +/-10% range.  We like to see +/-5% in Tapout tunes.  Yet his fuel trims were off by nearly 20%!

We would never run this tune in our own cars.  In fact, we’re pretty sure that not many others would feel comfortable running this tune.

Tapout Tuning is Two Years Old!

When we started this company we promised to do whatever was required to make ATS-Vs fast.  We have already helped to put eleven ATS-Vs into the tens so far, and there will be many more to come.  And these aren’t isolated cases with our own personal or in-house cars, and not just with specific sets of modifications either.

We are committed to working with the aftermarket to bring hardcore products to our little niche.  Tapout attended last year’s SEMA show in force. We are on the dyno every week testing and researching all things LF4.  Already we have introduced high duration camshafts and stronger valvesprings.  Ported throttle bodies.  Modified turbochargers.  High stall torque converters.  Carbon fiber driveshafts.  And this is only the beginning.  We are going to legitimately put some ATS-Vs into the nines this year, at full weight.  And not just our flagship car.  Some of yours too!

We vowed to solve hardware, software and tuning issues that no one else could fix.  We were first to show this community how we can easily bleed our own intercoolers, and eventually introduced a convenient DIY kit.  We were first to spec properly gapped spark plugs to this market and let everyone know how critical it is to utilize dielectric grease during the installation.  We identified and circumvented the infamous startup boost limiting timer.  We even found a way to carry the ZL1’s eLSD drag racing CCM calibration over to ATS-Vs.  There is still much more to do, and we are working diligently to resolve these issues for our community.

Tapout Tune of the Week!

Much like chaos never sleeps, we really don’t either. It’s important to us that we are able to make the tune modifications you need day and night. That way you can be back on the road kickin’ ass and takin’ names with all the new mods you’re running.

One of our favorite things is working with customer who have been driving their ATS-V stock for quite some time and decide they’re finally ready for a tune. Billy in Texas had owned his ATS-V for a couple years when he heard about Tapout and decided the time was right. We worked with Billy to tune his car remotely and were also fortunate enough to get a chance to work with him in person. “He [Scott] showed up at a track day near me and proceeded to spend the whole day refining my tune and the tunes of half a dozen other racers, in between drag runs”. We’re drag racers at heart, and anytime we can be there on the track to help others out you better believe we’re going to do it!
